Sealink, Localization of Semiconductor Core Components with Domestic Technology
Along with the analysis that the semiconductor industry has entered a super-cycle with D-RAM as the main sector, the value of the semiconductor equipment and related facilities has been increasing. According to the ‘PEP (Process Economics Program) report’ released by SEMI (Semiconductor Equipment and Material International) Institutes, it is noticed that the investment of the global semiconductor industry PEP equipment has increased 16% compared to the last year. Also, it is forecasted that the growth for the third consecutive year is going to be repeated as same as the “super-cycle” in 2016, with the expectation of investment growth is 15.5% in this year and 12% in next year.
Due to the lack of global supply of semiconductors, U.S. President Joe Biden issued an administrative order to supply semiconductors, and the EU is also showing its willingness to produce 20% of the world's semiconductors within a decade. Domestic semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are also investing in facility and technology development.
Sealink (CEO RHEE, hereinafter Sealink), which marks its 7th anniversary this year, is considered a promising company in the semiconductor field. The company, which is specialized in sealing devices that are essential for the front-end process equipment, improved the current magnetic fluid seal’s problems, and for the first time in the world, it succeeded in mass-producing non-linear contacted seal into semiconductor deposition equipment.
By applying the high-technology of non-linear contact theory, S-SEAL’s performance is beyond the magnetic fluid seal which is from Japanese companies. And it is expected that Sealink’s product is going to draw attention from the global market since the non-linear contacted seal creates very few particles occur and has twice a longer duration compared to conventional seals.
The “Sealing”, which prevents the foreign substances’ entrance into the chamber for the wafer deposition, is considered an essential technology in the semiconductor process. However, the conventional magnetic fluid seals (Magnetic seals) can only be operated in limited circumstances, so they can only perform in a vacuum condition. Also, the hardening phenomenon caused by the equipment’s high temperature could cause particles. And the fact that the magnetic fluid seal needs to apply coolants when the temperature is above 80°C also raised as an inconvenient part.
However, S-SEAL can be used without a cooling system up to 150°C, and with coolants, it can operate up to 800°C, and with this stability at high temperatures, it is being used in SK Hynix’s process. Furthermore, it has a longer duration than magnetic fluid seals, so it is expected that the S-SEAL could increase the security and productivity of the semiconductor.
CEO RHEE said “Sealink is a specialist in manufacturing sealing devices, such as Mechanical Seals, Rotary Feedthroughs, Linear Feedthroughs, and Rotary Unions, which are needed for the front-end process in the semiconductor equipment. Following the collaboration with SK Hynix as a partner in 2018, Sealink has been supplying products for the mass production lines to SK Hynix, Panasonic, and KC Tech.
